Thank you for reading and commenting all my blogs and tweets. Now it’s time to shutdown my home lab and spent attention to my family. My daughter Lina is one year old and 30 mins ago I give her a very big Teddy-Bear. That was really fun and she loves her new toy.

In 2012 I will finish my M$ Hyper-V project and I plan to publish a real world Hyper-V cluster configuration. I will start with the current Hyper-V version and I plan to do the same with Hyper-V 3.0 ! A Windows SMB 2.2 file server over Infinband is on my roadmap, too. And with a little bit of luck I can get an HP EVA 4400 for my home lab.

Merry Xmas 2011

Configuring the switch mesh is very simple. Disable routing and stacking and add all mesh ports with the mesh command. The vlans are added automatically to all mesh ports. Only ensure that every mesh switch knows all configured vlans.

My HP BladeSystem is connected with two LACP trunks to the switch mesh. I decided to setup VLAN tunneling  because the two connected blades running VMware ESX.The HP Virtual Connect setup was very simple and thanks to LLDP I detected a cabling error. LLDP is very useful! You can see several informations about the connected network port. That’s really cool.

Currently my mesh is connected with several 1 Gbits links, but with a little bit luck I can get some 10 GbE modules for my 3500yl switches.

maintenance this car. But I never stopped to dream about a new exciting and fast car. Yesterday my 8 year old dream became true: Audi Quattro

Well it’s not the true, well-known and popular Audi Quattro, but it has four wheel drive, lot’s of power and it’s of course an Audi, too. Say Hello to my new baby! It’s an Audi S4 from 2003. It has a 4.2 liters V8 engine with 344 horse power. This car is so much fun and it revs up to 7000 rpm. That’s absolutely amazing and this car is an addiction! I love it. But it’s a very comfortable and usable car, too. It has space enough for our baby and all the stuff we need for a journey. A perfect combination: Fun and usability. And now enjoy the pictures of my “Black Beast”.

Two weeks ago I auctioned two IBM JS21 power blades for very little money, because a rack based IBM Power4 oder Power5 server is incredible expensive. Even an outdatet pSeries 615/630 with slow 1 GHz Power4 processor is not affordable. I don’t like to pay several hundreds Euros for a low performance server. That’s why I decided to catch the mentioned JS21 power blades. Running these blades requires an IBM BladeCenter, of course and a member of my preferred Unix board offered me one with lot’s important accessoirs. Here it is, with two 2000 W power supplys, two Cisco Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module and two Brocade Fibre Channel Switch Modules. An IBM HS20 x86 blade is installed, too. Very nice, because the two JS21 blades aren’t yet shipped.

Compared to my HP c-Class BladeSystem the IBM BladeCenter is very outdated. Only four I/O modules – yes, I know, the BladeCenter H offers 8 I/O modules – and the design and packaging of the IBM blade server isn’t that nice and modern like my HP blade servers. But I know the IBM BladeCenter E is a very old system. It exists much longer than the newer HP c-Class BladeSystem and I’m only interessted in running a current release of AIX. Combined with the nice I/O modules it’s a very good deal.

Last year a good friend gave me a Sun Fire V490. The system was new and never used but had no system board. After several months searching for an affordable system board with no success I forgot the system and payed others more attention. But a few weeks ago I got an unbelievable offer. A fully populated Sun Fire V490 with two system boards, four 1,5 Ghz UltraSPARC 4+ CPUs and 32 Gigs of RAM for only little money! Yeaaahhh…Last friday I visited the company who sold the Sun. They used the machine as a SAP test and pre-live system but changed everything to IBM Power servers. After admire their amazing new data center I put the Sun Fire V490 into my car and went home.

Because I don’t need 8 cores and 32 Gigs RAM in a single system, I installed one system board into my other new V490. Now I have two fast and nice Sun Fire V490 servers. The UltraSPARC 4+ CPUs are amazing fast. Not comparable with US3 or US3+… I enjoy working with these two SPARC systems. Next week I will install an Oracle Database Grid (11g R2)… The first grid will use classic fibre channel SAN and my second test will use 4 Gbits ports per machine and Oracle dNFS !

Do you know all that science fiction movies about cyber war and control over people with computer systems and networks. What about the movie “Enemy of the State” with Will Smith, a complete life was killed by one mouse click. Or the movie “The Net” with Sandra Bullock, a similar situation. It’s scary how real these movies became now. 15 years ago people thought about critical possibilities with computer systems and world wide networks, today these doubts become reality. Look at the security problems with OpenBSD and the trouble around Wikileaks.

I don’t like this immense influence of politics and industries and I have no ideas how I can protect my private life! Stop surfing? Stop paying with credit cards, PayPal, etc.? I’m very afraid…

I saw her and felt in love immediately. She’s sooo nice and so sweet, my little Lina. She weights 3kg and is 50cm large… It’s unbelievable, I’m a very proud daddy.

The update procedure tooks some time but I had no problems. At the end I started the Virtual Connect Manager and I couldn’t believe it! HP changed lots of web sites to Adobe Flex! Woooowww… But I cannot understand why HP changed to Adobe Flex? The old HTML only version of Virtual Connect Manager runs fine and had a pretty nice look and feel. The new Adobe Flex based GUI is not 100%. I think HP should change the entire Virtual Connect Manager to Adobe Flex. The current solution is not my preferred implementation.
